The most Popular One Stop Shop on African Artefacts by Foreigners Visiting South Africa
_Curio D’Afrique welcomes you to a unique collection of African Bronze Art, statues and mask and various African Pieces.
Some of our pieces are very “RARE” and individual combined with some form of simplicity.
Curio D’Afrique does not cater for your everyday tourist as we are not a “touristy – Africa” store.
The items that we stock were used in various celebrations and rituals which make them authentic and originals. Our long-term suppliers bring these individual pieces direct from the villages from all over Africa to our store.
The different villagers also benefit financially from our store as we are an official display window to the rest of the world for them.
Over a span of 15 years Mr. Pieter van Baalen (Owner) has built up a personal friendship and a good business relationship with his ‘African-Art” suppliers and they greet Mr. Pieter as “FATHER how are you?” upon approach.
A “JANUS” portrayal occurs on our statues and as well on some of our masks. The term JANUS is normally attached to a piece of art where there is no gender present (nor male or female). These art pieces normally trends towards the “SUPREME GOD’S” or “GODDESSES”.
In Africa masks plays a major role. Masks get carved for an individual person. There are various masks for celebrating a good harvest, leading dancer, and turning into adult, ward off of bad luck and evil, protection against sole sorcerers. A mask gets painted a certain colour to request a long live or the strive towards a long live. Each and every colour on a mask has got a specific meaning and request.
Our statues leans more towards a heavenly trend (MYTHOLOGY) whereby a statue gets carved to make contact with their ancestors or “Supreme-Gods”. They also carve statues honouring their Kings and Queen’s as well as their Chiefs and Wife’s.
The biggest achievement in Africa can be seen under our Bronze collection. Totally hand made by means of the LOST WAX method. These Bronze Castings were achieved under the guidance of the Portuguese and the Muslim’s who showed them ± 600 years ago how to cast these unique bronze pieces.
A bronze piece is normally cast for status and royalty, where they honour the King, Queen, Queen mother and the heavenly twins.
All our items in our store accompany a short write up on where it is from and the function, estimated age and also the meaning of the colours and symbols on any item purchased.
We are most definitely a store with a difference. Please feel free to communicate with me even if you have a question on a African piece purchased somewhere else in the world. I will gladly identify it for you with my years of experience in the African Art.
